Making Love While High: A New Era of Lovemaking

There’s a lot of talk about the physical benefits of cannabis — from pain relief to reduced anxiety to improved focus — but it’s not very often you hear people discuss how it impacts your libido. Maybe it’s because sex talk is a private topic or maybe it’s because people are too embarrassed to ask the questions, but an enhanced sex life isn’t usually on your radar when you think about marijuana use. But truth be told, making love while high is actually a pretty magical experience. And according to recent research, for many people, marijuana increases sex drive in a very real, very significant way.

Do you typically pour a healthy glass of red wine to get you in the mood? You’re not alone. Alcohol is one of the best-known and most common drugs that people turn to when they’re looking to relax, to get into a more sexual state of mind and a more sensual physical state. But experts suggest that weed can also be an effective way to enhance your sexual experience; in fact, cannabis increases libido and sexual arousal according to recent study findings.

How do we Know that Marijuana Increases Sex Drive?

You can thank a team of dedicated researchers who evaluated a ton of behavioral information from tens of thousands of reproductive-age men and women across the country for this insight.

In a 2017 study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, a team of researchers led by Dr. Michael Eisenberg, an assistant professor of urology at Stanford University School of Medicine in California, surveyed information about the sexual habits and smoking habits of about 50,000 people who participated in an annual CDC survey over the course of 13 years. The survey looked at marijuana use and frequency (daily, weekly, monthly) as well as sexual frequency. They found a clear correlation between cannabis use and more frequent sexual activity.

According to the findings, those participants who reported smoking marijuana often had about 20 percent more sex compared to non-users. And it’s important to note that these findings that support a connection between higher marijuana use and increased coital frequency applied to both genders.

These Findings are a Shift from Previous Notions About Making Love While High

Once upon a time it was believed that marijuana could actually impair sexual function and sex drive, rather than enhance a sexual experience. For some men, one of the side effects of being high is an inability to maintain an erection, and for both sexes, a side effect can be an inability to reach orgasm. In addition, if you overdo it with your cannabis intake, especially with certain strains of pot, you can end up sleepy and sluggish rather than aroused and energized.

But these more recent findings are challenging those concerns about marijuana decreasing sex drive, or damaging sexual performance. After all, if more people who are smoking more weed are having more sex, then clearly their libidos must be doing just fine, right?

There are Definite Perks of Making Love While High

According to Dr. Lester Grinspoon, a retired Harvard Medical School professor known as “the grandfather of modern medicinal cannabis research,” marijuana has an intense ability to turn ordinary experiences into extraordinary experiences simply because of how it makes you feel all over. And this applies to more than just medicinal use — pot has the capacity to enhance a variety of human experiences, including your sex life.

Dr. Mitch Earleywine, professor of psychology at the State University of New York at Albany, explains to The Cut, “CB1 receptor seems to be involved in improved tactile sensations and general euphoria.” That receptor is where cannabinoids bind when you smoke marijuana, and it is the reason your entire body feels so good when you get high.

There is still a lot we don’t know about the effects of marijuana on how we feel in many ways and in a variety of scenarios. Considering how cannabis impacts us physically and mentally, it does make sense that cannabis increases libido and that it can improve our sexual experience. After all, marijuana can improve focus and help us appreciate all of the sensations in that present moment. It can help us relax. It can reduce pain and enhance all of your sensory experiences. Put those factors together and it should be no surprise that cannabis can not only improve your sexual satisfaction, but also make you want to have sex more frequently.

That said, there’s still the question of cause and effect. We don’t really know if smoking weed makes you want to have sex more, or if a heightened sex drive is due to other personality traits that contribute to a person’s marijuana habits. There’s definitely a need for more research on the topic, but for now we’ll leave you with this: people who smoke more marijuana are also having more sex on average, and we’re in favor of those odds.
