Recreational marijuana is changing the way people socialize, relax, medicate, travel, and now, it’s changing the way they spa as well. A Denver marijuana spa is hoping to open, bringing the city the first-ever spot to legally enjoy everything from a marijuana massage to ganja yoga (it’s a thing) in a welcoming environment, surrounded by other cannabis enthusiasts.
Back in February of this year Utopia All Natural Wellness Spa and Lounge applied to become the first of its kind in the wellness world. Imagine a 420 spa, where you can unwind in a gorgeous setting, and you get the best of the wellness and weed worlds — a spa where you can benefit from weed healing services as well as social consumption areas.
This Denver Marijuana Spa Hopes to be the First of its Kind
Before you book yourself a ticket to the Colorado capital, there are some things you need to know about this 420 spa. First of all, it’s not open yet. While major strides have been made in the pot legalization world, there’s still some work to be done in terms of social consumption.
At the end of 2016 Denver passed a ballot measure that allowed social marijuana use at some businesses and public spaces. The measure, called Initiative 300, calls for “the creation of a four-year pilot program — would allow businesses, from bars to cafes and even yoga studios, to seek city-issued permits to create “consumption areas,” according to the Denver Post. Less than a year later, city officials in Denver announced that the voter-authorized program allowing social consumption of pot was ready to launch, and the city was accepting business applications.
The first applicant? A local coffee shop named The Coffee Joint, which allows on-site vaping and edibles on a strict BYO policy.
Next up: this Denver marijuana spa that hopes to become a groundbreaking spa environment, according to Cindy Sovine, a marijuana lobbyist, and the CEO of the proposed 420 spa.
The Spa will Offer a lot more than Just a Marijuana Massage
This spa is designed to be a mecca for cannabis lovers, consumers, people in need of relaxation or physical healing, as well as a chance to learn about all types of cannabis-friendly consumption. Think cooking classes, cannabis-infused massages, educational seminars, medication sessions, support groups, socialization opportunities and ganja yoga. It’s everything you would want in a spa or wellness retreat, plus the benefits of marijuana, located right in Denver, in a historic mansion.
The mansion, known as the Creswell Mansion, was designed in the 1880s by a Denver architect and it has been on the National Register of Historic Places since the late 70s. It won’t be the first marijuana business to be located at this address; formally this building was home to a marijuana law firm as well as the Marijuana Policy Project. But opening a marijuana spa will certainly be a new feat for those in favor of legal cannabis consumption. After all, Colorado is one of the 9 states where recreational marijuana is legal, but the issue remains that there are very few places where you can legally consume it. This Denver marijuana spa hopes to solve that.
There are still a few hurdles to jump before the spa can officially open for business. According to the approved Initiative 300, in order for a business to become a legal Cannabis Consumption Establishment the business owners must first gain support from at least one nearby Registered Neighborhood Organization (RNO) or Business Improvement District (BID). The good news: Sovine claims to have support from numerous businesses in the vicinity of the proposed Utopia spa.
Stay tuned for updates on the official approval and opening of the Utopia All Natural Wellness Spa and Lounge, but its safe to say that we’re entering a new era in the world of relaxation and cannabis-infused wellness activities.
